In any busy auto shop, old oil filters can pile up on you in a hurry and become a disposal nightmare. An oil filter crusher can save you time and money by reducing them down to manageable size and helping you to dispose of them legally and properly. If the EPA investigates and find you are not disposing of your oil filters properly you could be fined a lot of money. If you are outsourcing your oil filter disposal to another company, the EPA can still come after you if they are not disposing of them correctly and legally. The best solution is to do it yourself with the right equipment.
Used oil filters are filled with old oil and sludge and are classified as hazardous waste by the EPA. The used oil is trapped in the filter with an anti-backflow valve that prevents the oil from flowing out. So trying to shake the old oil out or letting sit upside down on a drain will not do you any good. Only the shear force of an oil filter crusher can remove all the material too the satisfaction of the EPA. The force used to crush the filter pushes 95% of the oil and sludge from the filter. This process leaves you scrap metal that can be sold to scrap yard.
At Red Hill Supply, we carry the John Dow DOWAFC100-94 oil filter crusher. This unit requires 85 psi of shop air and has a powerful hydraulic system for crushing automotive filters. (There is a larger unit for bigger filters).  JohnDow Industries has been in the automotive aftermarket business for over 20 years and they serve mainly service bay operations. They offer everything from used oil systems to vehicle exhaust products. The hydraulic system in this unit is manufactured by SPX OTC. SPX is the largest automotive hydraulic manufacturer in the country. This means there are authorized service centers all over for warranty repairs.
