LED stands for Light Emitting Diode and are generally found in household appliances, electrical equipment and computers. Just look at your computer monitor right in front of you, chances are there is at least one red or green LED light staring right at you. LED lights are different from a conventional light bulb in several ways. First, they do not have filament that can burn out and they generated a lot less heat. I am sure you have experienced how hot a light bulb gets if try to remove one from a lamp that has been on for a while. That is the primary reason they are ideal for computers and electronics. LED lights will not generate enough heat to damage sensitive electronic circuit boards. LED lights are also more energy efficient and last a lot longer.

LEDs are diodes that produce light as side effect to having electricity passed through them. They are polarized, which means the electrical current has to pass in one direction or they will not produce light.  LED lights produce light in several colors. The most common is green, red and yellow. However, they can do much more than that including infrared. What has made LEDs more mainstream is the ability to produce white light. This enables LED lights to be used in flashlights, headlights, and much more.
