Whenever you are working on a vehicle engine, one of the biggest problems is always getting enough light to see exactly what you are doing.  It is a constant gripe among mechanics that the greatest design flaw of any car from a maintenance point of view is the fact that the hood will always obscure light from getting to the area where the work needs to be carried out.  Of course, there is a solution to the problem, and this is to use an underhood light – a light source that hangs from the hood of the car, and allows you to see what you are doing with the engine.  There are many different designs of underhood light available, and while these all fulfill the same basic purpose, they have a slightly different form.

Having a good source of illumination is essential when carrying out any job on a car engine.  With modern cars in particular, there are many different controls and components that you need to be careful with when you are working, and the last thing that any mechanic wants to do is damage the engine and create additional work during a job.  Without a decent underhood light to provide the illumination that you need to work effectively, it is more likely that you will make a mistake on the job, and either increase the amount of time that it takes to carry out an otherwise simple repair, or even cause additional damage to the vehicle that will cost you money to put right.

There are a number of factors to consider when choosing the right underhood light for your needs.  Firstly, you need to find one that produces enough light for you to work efficiently.  This may seem obvious at first; however, it can make a real difference.  Cheaper models do not always produce sufficiently light to make the difference when working, and rather than making the job easier, they actually just get in the way and create additional shadows.

It is also important to think about what kind of underhood light you want.  In the past, the only option available was a single bulb.  This casts shadows around the engine bay because the light only comes from one place.  Other alternatives that are now available include multiple LED underhood lights such as the Astro Pneumatic AST6310 120 LED underhood light, which has a 63 inch row of lights and can illuminate even the largest engine bay adequately.

An alternative to and LED light is a fluorescent tube light.  Central Tools produces an underhood light with a 44 inch long shatter resistant light that is perfect for most vehicles, although the light it produces can become tiring to the eyes over extremely long periods.

Both multiple LED and fluorescent tube powered underhood lights provide an excellent alternative to traditional halogen lamps, and as soon as you have tried them, you will discover that the wide angle of light, coupled with the lack of shadow, and of course, the ease of use that they offer, you will never want to go back to a traditional bulb and suffer the lower light quality, lack of reliability and of course the shadows that are cast just where you want to work.

With a modern underhood light, you will find that getting to grips with almost any job on an engine becomes easier.  One thing is certain; you can never have too much light when you are working.  It makes any job easier when you can see every aspect and area of the engine properly, reduces mistakes, and makes getting things done right the first time the norm.
