When you are faced with a cleaning job on a small component or delicate item that cannot be stripped using any other method, then sand blasting it is generally the best option. While larger portable sandblasters that can clear paint and other coatings from wide areas are fine for bigger jobs, a smaller and more precise tool is needed for precision work. A sandblaster cabinet gives you the perfect means to carry out this kind of delicate work, and thanks to the design of the unit collects all of the abrasive material that is used, and ensures that your workshop remains clean throughout the task.

Typically, most sandblaster cabinets are very similar to each other in terms of their design, and it is only in their actual use that they differ. The standard model of sandblaster cabinet is a large box on legs with a clear lid that on some models can be lifted to allow access to the inside to allow whatever is being cleaned to be placed into the unit with ease. Some of the cheaper, low quality units are quite lightweight, and will not stand up well to heavy use. Top quality sandblaster cabinets are constructed from 16 gauge welded steel, and will take a real battering in use. The window should be scratch resistant glass – never Plexiglas – so that any stray sand that hits it will not damage it to the extent that you can no longer see what you are working with.

A comfortable pistol grip sandblaster tool is mounted inside most units, and this is generally a little less sensitive than a normal hand held model, as your movements inside the box are slightly restricted by the gloves that are built in. You still get plenty of power however, and many models feature an adjustable nozzle to control the flow of air and sand through the gun. This allows you to go from a relatively wide area through to a pin sharp beam of air to really get into the tighter cracks and ensures an excellent finish.
