All modern cordless tools today use advanced battery and battery chargers to give you the maximum power and life out of your cordless tools. Cordless would not be possible without the advances made in this technology.

Most cordless tools use high-capacity nickel cadmium (NiCad) batteries. This allows these types of batteries to create much more power than older generation batteries of the same size just few years ago. This what has made the cordless tool revolution a reality. Advanced rechargeable batteries have freed your favorite power tools from being leashed to an electrical socket. Now you can carry a cordless drill out to a campsite or up in the deepest part of your attic. NiCd batteries last longer and work harder than their earlier model cousins. Now there are even nickel metal hydride (NiMH) rechargeable batteries that are even more powerful than NiCad. These batteries are denser and can hold up to 50% more power. These are also easier to dispose of and safer for the environment than nickel cadmium. (NiCad batteries are classified as hazardous waste.)

Battery chargers are the part of the cordless tool equation. There have also been advances in chargers as well. Most new ones have micro processors that control the recharging process. These microprocessors reduce the amount of time needed to charge a battery, monitor the condition of the battery and prevent overcharging. The more expensive cordless drills and cordless impacts come standard with microprocessor control chargers. They should have three or four recharging prongs on the battery to make contact with the charger.
