Infrared thermometers are quick and effective non contact diagnostic tools for the automotive garage. 1. Infrared thermometers enable a mechanic to take quick and safe measurements and diagnose temperature related issues for the engine and exhaust systems.  You can measure both sides of the catalytic converter for variations in the temperature. 3. The air conditioning system is probably one of the more obvious places to use an IR thermometer. A A/C technician can easily check if the heater, air conditioner and vents are cooling and heating to the proper temperature. Just aim it at the A/C vent and presto you tell exactly how cold the air blowing from the vent is.
4. The brake system is also a great place to use this tool. An infrared thermometer can tell a brake mechanic if there is uneven heat among the brake rotors. If one brake rotor is significantly higher than the rest could indicate a serious problem or excessive wear.
