What exactly is a cordless ratchet?  First let us define what a conventional air ratchet is.  An air ratchet wrench is an automotive air tool that is basically an air powered socket set. The blades rotate at high speeds to allow the air ratchet to fasten and unfasten the nuts and bolts without unnecessary human physical exertion. Generally they do not have the same nut busting torque as an impact wrench but they are better suited for work in tighter areas. You would use an air ratchet on a repetitive task such as loosening and tightening nuts.

In other words, air ratchet wrenches are supposed to protect your wrists from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome from the wrist twisting you get from your standard socket wrench. Now ratchets can either be driven by air (pneumatic tools) or by electricity (either by rechargeable batteries or a direct current). Instead of manual twisting the tool to unscrew all the nuts and bolts under the hood, the rotary blades of the ratchet spin at certain speed using torque.

There are generally two classifications of electrical powered ratchets when it comes to where it gets its source of energy supply.  One type is the one with the cord and the other of course is cordless.

While cordless tools allow more flexibility and extra mobility, in the past they had the disadvantage of short battery life. When the rechargeable battery runs down there’s nowhere to turn for more power. Ratchets with electrical cords allow continuity of tasks as the energy supply is steady and the extension cord is long enough.  However an electrical cord can be an impediment and possibly a hazard when working around water for example. Modern rechargeable cordless ratchets are the solution to the extension cord problem and finding suitable electrical power in remote job sites. Now state of the art technology in rechargeable batteries has greatly extended battery life and made cordless tools a standard tool with professional mechanics. For example, Ingersoll Rand cordless ratchets are available in Lithium and NiCadium batteries for maximum life.

Ingersoll Rand cordless ratchets are the industry leader and for good reason. Some of the patented features available are as follows. Their units run on 7.4 volts IQv, Nickel Cadmium and Lithium Ion batteries so the possibility of losing power in the middle of a critical handiwork is remote.  Ingersoll Rand also features a patent pending IQv Grip twist that enables lock mounting that grips the battery into the tool for the strongest and most secure design available in the market.  Among others, eye-popping specs include a speed of 225 rotations per minute, which of course lets you finish the job in a hurry.  It also has a proprietary motor control with variable speed that allows you to manipulate any speed you allow the rotary device.  An advanced head design likewise permits durability for the product—it can stand up to the toughest professional use and abuse that is especially built with proven 103A pneumatic ratchet heads.

Another good manufacturer to consider is Florida Pneumatic. They produce the Cordless Pro-Lectric Professional Cordless Ratchet.  This ratchet carries its own LED light and an impressive 18 lbs. of torque. Weighing only 1.7 lbs, the weight is not the only thing that’s light about this ratchet, it only takes one hour to recharge and works for eight hours straight. This product comes with two 7.2V batteries with charger and blow molded case.

If your looking for a smaller option consider the Ingersoll Rand 3/8 cordless ratchet that runs on 14.4 volt Lithium Ion and Cadmium batteries. This little gem is capable of doing 175 ft-lbs of reverse torque and rips through a power of 2,200 RPM and 3,000 BPM that is housed on engineered composites with patent pending metal sub-frame for unbreakable strength.  The IRW175 is ideal for general automotive and service work such as suspensions, front-ends, brakes, engines, auto body work and fastening.
