A brake drum gauge is one of the specialty tools that you can use for a vehicle. This tool is used to measure the dimensions of brake drums. It can determine the dimensions from three inches up to 16 inches. Some brake drum gauges can measure more than 16 inches, while others can only evaluate up to 14 inches. The level of measurement actually depends on the size of the brake drum gauge that you purchased. The maximum size most units could measure is up to 19-20 inches only.

However, there is a standard model for this vehicle specialty tool whether it is digital or not. A brake drum gauge is a ruler-like equipment made of two anvils that are used for measurement. The first anvil is located at the tip of the brake drum gauge, which is the steady part of the tool. The second anvil is movable, which helps in the assessment of the break drum. The first anvil is placed at the rear part of the brake drum while the second anvil measures the rest of the break drum.  Some brake drum gauges have LCD’s that will easily tell you the dimensions of the break drum. These are the digital models currently released by tool manufacturers. As for old models of the brake drum gauges, you need to inspect the size manually. A manual brake drum gauge can be error-prone especially if you are not familiar in using one. A digital version, on the other hand, can measure accurately provided it is in good shape and condition. That is why it is always important to ask the vehicle tool retailer if they provide a storage case for the tool. The storage case can be very useful in preserving the digital brake drum gauge because it protects the tool from common environmental pollutants such as rust and mold. These pollutants can hinder your digital brake drum gauge from functioning properly. This is where the manual gauge has its advantage over the digital version.  A manual brake drum gauges can still operate even if they are stored in your garage and has not been used for long periods of time. Even though they are already, they can still be cleaned without any worry that you might damage some parts of the tool.

It has been mentioned earlier that the purpose of using a brake drum gauge is to evaluate heat-checked, worn, or scored brake drum dimensions. So, it is important that before you purchase a break drum, you already have an idea which type you are going to buy and you also have an idea on how to calibrate the tool. Always take into account the possible size of the new brake drum where you will use your current brake drum gauge on.
