As any one who takes pride in their work will tell you, the best way to get a good finish is to make a good start, and when it comes to painting, the most important thing is preparation.  By using high quality products throughout your painting, it is possible to get a fantastic finish every time you work.  Despite using a good quality spray gun and a well mixed paint, many people find that they still get a relatively poor finish to their paint because they don’t prepare well, and one of the best ways to ensure that your finish is good is to use Scotch Brite Pads.

3M, the company that produce Scotch products is one of the world’s leading chemical companies, and are well known for the incredible range of products that they make.  Scotch Brite Pads are a useful addition to the company’s product range, and are an absolute godsend for anyone who needs to remove imperfections from a surface and get it ready for painting or any other process.

As with sand paper, there are a wide variety of different grades of Scotch Brite pads available, and all of them are produced for specific purposes.  From very fine pads that can be used in order to remove the smallest imperfections in a layer of paint or primer and get it ready for the next layer to be applied, through to heavy duty Scotch Brite Pads that can be used to smooth metal out and remove burrs to create a good surface.

One of the main concerns that painters have when it comes to abrasives is that they do not create imperfections in the surface and cause more harm than they prevent.  In the past, many companies produced pads that were made of wire wool, and this created a number of problems.  Firstly, when the pads were used to scuff a surface ready to paint, they would often leave particles of rust on the paint, as well as leaving the surface of the metal pitted.  With Scotch Brite Pads, which are made from a nylon mesh, this problem does not exist.  The softer materials are able to remove materials such as paint without too much problem, but will not have the same impact on the underlying metals and create imperfections beneath the paint.

In order to get the best results when painting, it is important to ensure that each layer of paint is applied to a surface that is as close to perfection as possible.  This means that before each coat of paint is applied the underlying surface needs to be smoothed out using Scotch Brite pads or another light abrasive.

Of course, beyond getting a fantastic finish to a paint job, there are literally hundreds of other uses in a workshop for these versatile scourers, and by choosing a coarser pad you will be able to use it for serious engine cleaning jobs and even metal work.  A coarse pad will be able to remove metal burrs from a seam and get a metal component cleaned and ready for use in an engine.

Thanks to their great value prices, there is never a temptation to use a Scotch Brite pad beyond its best, so you never risk getting a poor quality result just because you used a pad that as deteriorating.  It is important to keep a good stock of Scotch Brite pads within your workshop thanks to their versatility when it comes to finishing, cleaning, and preparing surfaces for any purpose.  Red Hill Supply offers the complete range of pads to suit your needs throughout the workshop, and to provide you with a full range of supplies.
