When staff are working in an elevated environment where there is any risk of falling and getting injured or killed, it is essential that they wear appropriate safety equipment. This should always include some kind of fall arrest system, so that if they slip or fall from a great height, they stop well before reaching the ground. The harness and safety lanyard system that is provided to staff when they are working on any form of raised platform should be properly suited to their weight in order to provide the maximum amount of protection, and to ensure that it does not fail in the event of an accident.A safety lanyard is one of the simplest and easiest to use fall arrest systems available, and is designed to be used by a single person at a time. Quite simply, the user clips the safety lanyard onto their belt or safety harness using the karabiner supplied, and then connects the other end of the lanyard onto the frame of the platform that they are working on to secure them into place. One of the main reasons why staff are sometimes unwilling to actually fasten themselves into place with a safety lanyard when working in an exposed environment is that they perceive the strap to be something that will get in their way, and make it more difficult for them to get the job done. Thankfully, the latest designs of safety lanyard are much more manageable, as well as being longer. This means that the user has a lot more range to work in without having to constantly disconnect and reconnect the unit every time they want to move around from one location to another as they are carrying out their task, There are a number of different safety lanyard designs available, and although they all perform essentially the same function, the actual implementation of their design means that they all have certain benefits that they offer, and these slight refinements to the basic structure means that they are able to offer slightly different responses to an accident, as well as providing more or less convenience when in use. One of the most popular types of safety lanyard is the Manyard Shock absorbing safety lanyard. These models come in a range of lengths and breaking strains, and include a number of refinements to make them even more effective than standard models. They include the ability to contract slightly in use to ensure that they do not trail behind the user and create a tripping hazard when in use, and when required, the stretching nature of the material means that they have a much gentler braking effect than static straps, and are less likely to cause injury to a faller because of the high levels of deceleration that are experienced otherwise. Priced competitively at around $168 - $183 each, they are an essential purchase for any staff member who is working in an exposed situation. A more complex and indeed less intrusive offering is the self-retracting safety lanyard. This design features a high-tension rope with a high breaking strain that is enclosed within a spool. The unit is clipped to the wearer and to a suitable anchor point on whatever platform the user is working on. In the event of a fall, the lanyard is paid out at a measured rate in order to slow the faller gently. Both Dyno Lock and Aptura models are available from Red Hill Supply, and the lengths of the strap within the spool varies. An intelligent internal braking system allows for vertical movement in normal use, but engages when the speed of deployment exceeds four and a half feet per second. This measure ensures that the user can move around comfortably when they need to, but are stopped from falling. The braking system provides an in built shock absorber to reduce the possibility of injury in use. Whatever particular situation a member of staff is working in, if they are at risk of falling, the provision of a safety lanyard will prevent serious injury, while ensuring that ease of movement when carrying out a job is not impaired in the slightest. |
