An air winch is a major investment for a business, and ensuring that you choose the right model at the start will ensure that you get the tool that is best suited to the kind of use that you have in mind.  Different air winches have different levels of performance such as their capacity to lift items, and it is important to bear the following factors in mind when choosing the right piece of equipment for your specific needs.
The lifting capacity is perhaps the most important factor you need to consider when choosing an air winch.  The nature of the design of a winch means that any air winch will actually lift better when there is less rope on the drum. Because of the torque arm effect, the closer the rope is to the center of the drum, the higher load that the winch can raise with ease.
The amount of rope or line on the drum also has an effect on the speed with which loads can be lifted.  Although the rotational speed of the drum will remain relatively constant, when more line is wound around the drum, it will lift much more quickly.
When you are choosing your air winch, you should consider what kind of applications you will be using it for.  If your load requirements are relatively high, you will need a more powerful winch, and as a rule of thumb, you should choose a model with a higher capacity than you actually need, as this will allow for greater long term flexibility.  It is possible to use a pulley system to reduce the load on the winch if you are moving extremely heavy items that are greater than the rated load capacity of the winch, and this will also give you additional control over the speed.
One thing that many users do not give sufficient consideration to when selecting an air winch is the length of wire rope or rope that will be needed.  If you are working in construction where you are required to lift items up a long distance, you will need to build the length of rope and its effect on the lifting capacity of the winch into your selection process.  The ratio of the thickness of the rope to the diameter of the winch barrel can have a huge impact on the lifespan of the rope and the ease with which loads can be moved.  The ratio should never go below 15:1 under ANSI guidelines.   It is also possible to add different drums to most air winches in order to manage different requirements, and to cope with the needs of your particular industry.
The gearing ratios offered by different models should be considered.  If you are primarily using the winch to lower items rather than lifting them, look for a winch with a lower gear ratios as these overhaul better, and allow the load to be lowered in a controlled way without using the throttle too much.
You can choose from manual and automatic braking systems, and both have advantages.  Automatic brakes will engage if the load is slipping, and these are highly recommended for any heavy lifting application, as they add an extra layer of safety to operation.  The manual braking system is useful when controlling the load and you will find that applying the band brake when lifting; you will be able to gain exceptional spotting control.
